În timpul invaziei naziste, Georg fuge din Parisul asediat asumându-și identitatea unui autor mort ale cărui acte le posedă. Blocat în Marsilia, o întâlnește pe Marie, o tânără femeie disperată să-și găsească soțul dispărut, pe nume Weidel, exact bărbatul a cărui identitate o folosește acum Georg. „La fel ca și opera sa de până acum, cel de-al patrulea film al regizorului este elegant, plin de ingeniozitate și provocări intelectuale” scriau, după premiera de la Berlin, cei de la Screen Daily. Transit se bazează pe romanul omonim al Annei Seghers, scris în exil.
